10. April 2009Lymec-PM: Riots in Moldova: EU so close, yet democracy so far
This week was marked with spontaneous post-election riots in Moldova. Thousands of young Moldovans stormed through the capital, Chisinau, to protest alleged fraud in elections won by the Communist Party. The demonstrators took to the streets on Tuesday, fighting with police and ransacking parliament. The OSCE gave a mostly positive assessment of the poll, though noting that it was marred by allegations of police intimidation of voters and candidates, but a British member of the OSCE's observation team, MEP Baroness Emma Nicholson (ALDE), questioned that conclusion and said she found it "difficult to endorse the very warm press statement" from the head of the OSCE. On April 3rd and 4th NATO celebrates it's 60th birthday in the border region between France and Germany. At the occasion the alliance also celebrates the full return of one of the alliance's founding members, France. Nearly half a century after France left NATO's military command, it returns to it this year.
