Lymec-PM: Lisbon Treaty: let’s not open the Pandora box (20. Oktober 2009)
Slovak foreign minister Miroslav Lajcak said in a television speech that Slovakia may also seek an opt-out from part of the Lisbon Treaty if Czech Republic gets their opt-out designed to prevent ethnic Germans expelled after World War II from claiming back their property. However, if Vaclav Klaus succeeds with his attempt to obtain an opt-out for Czech Republic, all other Member States would now have to re-ratify the treaty, given that the negotiations on the Treaty have been closed and cannot be reopened now that it has been fully ratified by the 26 other Member States.
LYMEC President Aloys Rigaut stressed: ”Enough is enough. Let’s ratify the Treaty once and for all and turn to more interesting debates. There has already been too much talk about institutions and internal rules, EU citizens are tired of these debates about footnotes and comas. What they want is that we tackle today's urgency: putting our economies and public finances back on track.”
LYMEC Bureau Member Mette Lykke Nielsen argues: ”The EU presidency and the Prime Ministers in EU Member States should live up to their responsibility and put pressure on the Czech Republic. It is in all members’ interest to move forward. The political train is leaving, several issues are on the agenda, e.g. COP15 in Copenhagen, getting the economy going again and preventing youth employment. We need a strong and efficient EU.”
