Lymec-PM: Yes to Lisbon – yes to the future! (03. Oktober 2009)
Just 18 month after rejecting it in a first referendum, the Irish voters now approved the EU Reform Treaty of Lisbon. Around 67 % of Irish voters approved the treaty, which we believe will make the EU more democratic as well as capable of having a stronger stance in today’s globalised world.
LYMEC President Aloys Rigaut states: "This is a good day for European citizens. The deadlock is over and we now look at the future with confidence again and focus on something else than institutional matters. This is a relief in today’s economic, social and environmental context", before adding: "With the Treaty of Lisbon now finally adopted in Ireland, only the Czech Republic and Poland remain to ratify the Treaty. We call on both countries to now swiftly complete the ratification process, so that European citizens can as soon as possible enjoy the added transparency and democracy brought by the Treaty."
LYMEC Vice President Alexander Plahr declares: "We now demand a quickly and efficient implementation of the Lisbon Treaty as well as the continuation of the integration process. While there is still room for improvement, for example giving the European Parliament the right of initiative, the Treaty is a great step forward, especially in regard to strengthening the foreign policy area and more co-decision. A yes to Lisbon is a yes to the future of Europe!"
